The Soul of the Object
This magnificent handcrafted urn is a testament to the masterful fusion of two distinct Moroccan artisanal traditions: pottery and metalwork. The body of the vessel is crafted from Natural Clay, finished with a rich, deep green glaze that possesses a subtle iridescence and a deliberately distressed, antique patina, showing glimpses of the earthenware beneath. This earthy base is then encased in an elaborate suit of mixed-metal armor, transforming a functional vessel into a work of fine art.
The metal overlay is a stunning interplay of silver (white metal) and warm copper tones, meticulously worked using traditional repoussé and chasing techniques. The designs are a complex tapestry of geometric patterns, scrolling arabesques, and floral motifs, centered around a prominent six-pointed star—the Seal of Solomon—a symbol of wisdom and protection deeply rooted in Moroccan culture. Two large, ornate ring handles, also heavily decorated, flank the neck, adding to its imposing silhouette.
Every inch of this urn tells a story of skilled craftsmanship. The hammered textures of the metal, the careful layering of the different colored metals, and the intentional imperfections in the glaze all contribute to its character as a unique, time-honored object. It is not merely a decorative item but a piece of history, evoking the grandeur of old Moroccan palaces and the skilled hands of the 'Maalems' (master craftsmen) of Fes. It stands as a powerful centerpiece, perfect for a grand entryway or a sophisticated living space.
"Every imperfection tells a story of human hands at work."
