The Soul of the Object
This spectacular platter is a masterwork of mixed-media Moroccan craftsmanship, hailing from the historic kilns of Fez. It begins as a traditional Fassi ceramic piece, hand-thrown and painted with intricate geometric and arabesque patterns in deep cobalt oxide against a brilliant white tin glaze. The central design features a radiating star motif, symbolizing the heavens, surrounded by complex interlocking layers of traditional Islamic geometry and flowing floral elements.
What elevates this piece to a functional treasure is the subsequent application of intricate metalwork. A skilled metalsmith has painstakingly fitted hand-cut and hammered nickel silver (maillechort) filigree over the ceramic body. This metal lattice not only outlines and highlights the painted designs, adding a shimmering texture, but also serves a historical protective function, reinforcing the clay against breakage. Small accents of red and turquoise enamel dots are nested within the metalwork, adding jewel-like pops of color.
While fully capable of serving dry ceremonial foods like couscous or pastries during grand celebrations, its stunning visual complexity makes it primarily an objet d'art. It is designed to be displayed prominently on a wall, bringing the opulent aesthetic of a Moroccan palace into any interior space.
"Every imperfection tells a story of human hands at work."
