The Soul of the Object
This striking wall panel is a masterful example of Moroccan craftsmanship, moving beyond traditional geometric patterns to present a lively figurative scene. It depicts a horseman dressed in traditional white attire and turban, riding a decorated piebald horse across sandy terrain against a deep blue sky. The imagery celebrates the 'Tbourida' or Fantasia, an ancient equestrian tradition and cultural performance deeply rooted in Moroccan heritage, symbolizing martial skill and community pride.
Unlike standard mosaic work using uniform manufactured tiles, this piece is constructed using the authentic Zellige technique. Master artisans in Fez begin with clay tiles that are glazed and fired. Then, using a sharp, hammer-like tool called a 'menqach', they painstakingly hand-chisel each individual tessera—in this case, small, brick-like rectangles—from the larger tiles. These thousands of tiny, irregular pieces are then assembled upside down in a frame before being set with cement, creating a durable and textured work of art.
The vibrant blues, earthy yellows, creams, and stark black glazes are derived from natural minerals, ensuring the colors remain brilliant for generations. This panel is not merely decorative; it is a piece of cultural storytelling, bringing the dynamic spirit of the Moroccan Maghreb into any interior space. It arrives ready to hang as a substantial statement piece.
"Every imperfection tells a story of human hands at work."
