The Soul of the Object
This magnificent decorative charger represents a striking marriage of two distinct Moroccan artisan traditions: pottery and metalwork. Built upon a base of white glazed ceramic, the piece is dramatically encased in an ornate, dark metal overlay, likely a pewter or German silver alloy, giving it an appearance of immense weight and ancient treasure. The contrast between the smooth, cool ceramic peeking through the negative spaces and the heavily textured metal is visually arresting. The intricate design radiates from a central medallion featuring classic Islamic geometric star patterns. Spokes connect the center to the elaborate rim, terminating in stylized interpretations of the 'Khamsa' (Hand of Fatima), an ancient symbol widely believed throughout the Maghreb to offer protection against the evil eye and bring blessings. The metal itself is worked using repoussé and chasing techniques, creating raised relief and fine detailed patterns of scrollwork, bosses, and smaller stars along the heavy rim. Originating from the workshops of Fez, where guilds for both ceramics and metalcraft have thrived for centuries, this charger is a statement piece. It is designed primarily for display, ready to be mounted as a focal point on a wall, bringing a touch of Andalusian grandeur and spiritual symbolism to any interior space.
"Every imperfection tells a story of human hands at work."
